Volunteer Program in Atenas, Costa Rica
The Green Pet Foundation offers you a volunteer program that follows your needs in order to enjoy a unique and ecological experience in Costa Rica.
The volunteer program in Costa Rica has the goal that the participants help us with our socio-environmental work in the town of Atenas, Costa Rica, and that at the same time they can visit the tourist attractions of the zone, learn the Spanish language, share with the families that will house them, plant a tree, and at the same time they will be able to explore other places in Costa Rica.
Program Description (what it consists of)
In groups or individually, The Green Pet Foundation offers you the opportunity to complete volunteer service, in which you will be able to stay with the family in the community, learn from them, and collaborate with a long list of volunteer activities that are developing in the Atenas community, which is considered to possess the best climate in the world.
We have included the following activities for volunteer:
Pure honey and organic "San Isidro Products"
Summary: small production of organic honey in the village of San Isidro in Atenas needs your help, this family has years of experience in extracting honey 100% pure and in the past year have begun with the sale of the product high quality for the entire community. They have also decided to grow your business with the tourists visit the place in order to take a tour of honey and generate more revenue for your small business, you can help this family to grow and realize their dreams.
Objective: You will work on this property, creating tourism trails, interpretive signs, clearing the area for tourists, arranging small roads, creating tools necessary for extracting honey and collaborating with cleaning honey extractor area and other activities important.
Transport to workplace: bus ($1), bus ride lasts 25 minutes.
AMASIA:
Summary: This is an orchid nursery and plant variety that is attended by ladies to sell and get money for your family resources and organization. In this place also serve tourists, which is why they need a lot of help to improve the place to cater to tourists in the best way, also need help in the care and sale of plants.
Objectives: work with orchids in a greenhouse cared for by women that sell these plants and need a lot of help; planting, making organic compost, caring for the plants, and helping in the greenhouse.
Transport to workplace: bus ($1), bus ride lasts 35 minutes.
Resort "Los Altos de Dona Cecilia"
Summary: This is a place that needs a lot of help to grow as a resort, as it is a family whose main attraction a typical Costa Rican lunch where they sell typical Costa Rica, along with this offer a guided walk through coffee plantations with indigenous traces. The main idea of this micro family business is to attract tourism in order to grow and provide better service. You can help us help this great place with an amazing view of the central valley of Costa Rica.
Objectives: Here you can work creating tourism trails, interpretive signs, clearing the area for tourists, arranging small roads, creating a lookout for tourists, creating information and publicity material for the site to grow as major tourist spot in the town of Atenas and especially helping these people eager to work.
Transport to workplace: bus ($1), bus ride lasts 35 minutes.
Organic Estate (bestcoffeetour.com):
Summary: This is a family farm which produces organic coffee on a small scale, are also involved in tourism where this family explains the production process of coffee and give tourists tasting coffee types. Here need a lot of help, you can help to make this business an example for everyone.
Objective: work is selecting Costa Rica's golden grain on a beautiful, organic farm; you will be able to pack the beans and help with the maintenance of the farm trails, creating a lookout for tourists and more.
Transport to workplace: bus ($1), bus ride lasts 25 minutes
Rescuing Nature with Green Pet:
Objective: cleaning and reforestation of sources of water, restoration of fish tanks, cleaning and creation of trails, planting of trees and plants to attract butterflies, construction and installation of boxes for birds and the local fauna, labeling of trees.
Workplaces:
1. Trail "mules bridge": cleaning the trails, labeling trees, fixing the trails, reconstruction of rest areas
2. Cleaning and rescue of the Quebrada Matías River in conjunction with public institutions of the town and NGOs of the Atenas community
3. Atenas Municipal Forest in the zone of the town Estanquillos. Maintenance of the trails, creating a lookout for tourists, and more.
Transport to workplace: depends on the place that you wish to apply your volunteer project.
Green Pet offers volunteer programs for the community with social character in Atenas, if you also want to help the community of Atenas we have these projects available:
Railroad Museum:
Summary: This is a railway museum that needs a lot of help to rescue the history of Atenas, is an asset for all the people of Atenas which is in danger of being lost if they are not given the necessary oversights. Here there is no dedicated staff to take care of this facility is by volunteering your support save this architectural gem.
Objective: improve the exhibits in the museum, clean the exhibits, remodeling of the infrastructure and more.
Transport to workplace: $2 round-trip to workplace, ride lasts approximately 15 minutes.
Work with children between the ages of four and six:
Summary: The kindergarten in Atenas are within public schools are centers for children aged between 5-6 years, these children do not resiven English because these schools have no budget to pay more teachers, which is why Green Pet and these kids ask for your help in this volunteer program to teach these children basic English in order to prepare better.
Available Time: 7 AM to 10:30 AM
Available Locations: School kindergartens (Central, Fátima, Los Angles) Fátima - 15 minutes walking to arrive at location Los Angeles - 10 minutes walking to arrive at location or bus ($1)
Objectives: work with the teachers, cut, paste, sing, and more.

Palmares Children’s Home, work with children between the ages of zero and twelve:
Summary: This place is dedicated to caring for children in neglect, which know the current status of their parents, many are drug addicts and left alone to these children who need your help. This place is located in a neighboring town of Atenas.
Objectives: home for orphaned children, volunteers are needed to play with the children, teach them basic English, help with homework, etc.
Available Time: bus leaves at 8 AM ($2), bus ride last 25 minutes, arrive at location at approximately 9:30 AM, work ends at 11:45 AM
CEN CINAI (National Headquarters for Education and Nutrition Centers and Centers for Children’s Integral Care ):
Summary: These children are mostly single mothers who need to work a few hours at housewives to support their children, as some of the mothers did not have the opportunity to study.
Objectives: children between the ages of two and four years, work together with the teacher, drawing, painting, singing, playing, etc.
Workplace/Transport: center of town, you can walk to the location from any place where you are house
Note: only children of school age receive English classes (in school), the other children only receive English from the volunteer program
Handcrafts with Recyclable Trash:
Summary: These handcrafts are made with recyclable waste you can help ladies to make them so they can sell these creations at low cost and help with your home and your children as some are old ladies.
Objective: to create objects like cardboard decorations, keyholders, and similar objects, creating information and publicity material and more.
Transport to workplace: bus ride $1 round-trip, ride lasts approximately 20 minutes.
Horse Stables - “The Condor”:
Summary: Work with horses in Atenas. Some people have no place in their home for care horses, so pay a low cost for them in the stable with their help not pay people to be in the care of these horses as some are gifts or family heirlooms, so you would the owner of the place to grow your micro business.
Objectives: work with horses; cleaning the stalls, brushing the horses, riding the horses, feeding them, cutting the grass to make food.
Transport to workplace: bus $1 round-trip, bus ride lasts approximately 20 minutes.
Work with senior citizens – Retirment/Nursing Home:
Summary: Older adults staying in this home because their families by some circumstance can not care for them, you can help them feel supported and also to see that they have friends who come from other countries to help them share with them.
Objective: give therapies along with the therapist in charge or if you have experience you can work alone, help with the meals, walks etc.
Workplace/Transport: located in the center of town, no transportation needed
María’s Hostel:
Summary: This is a hostel where they live 10 to 15 people and their families are 6 people give a small contribution, the others are collected from hospitals because their families did not want to take care of them anymore and Maria with her big heart the accepts no payment for them to feel accepted in a home. Your help is very valuable for these people as some feel abandoned.
Objective: a hostel where the creator has 11 elderly people, only five of the families of the elderly people pay her a small amount to care for them, the other elderly people are cared for, fed, and bathed free of charge; if you have experience or you wish to help her with these therapies, she will be very grateful to you.
Transport to workplace: there is no bus to the hostel, you should take a taxi ($6) round-trip, ride lasts approximately 10 minutes, if you travel in a group the trip will be cheaper.
Teaching the English to children in the community:
Summary: This is English language instruction for children, youth and adults.
It is a valuable help to the community of Atenas since this language is required today, many of the families or people can not study this language because they can not afford a course and volunteer you can help with the language ability of fully free and can help form children, youth and adults to perform better in the future.
Objective: as a volunteer you can impart English classes or another language to children and any person with limited resources in the community.
Available time: the program coordinator will assign you a place in the center of town for you to give classes.
APRODISA:
Summary: This is a workshop for disabled people where they do some work to feel accepted by society as we know many of these people discriminate and some only have mild disability, you can help them feel better valued because they will see in you a friend who comes from very long to spend some time with them.
Objective: a workshop for the disabled, you can help them in giving physical therapy, recreation, or any other therapy such as drawing with pencils or watercolors.
Transport to workplace: you can walk to the location from any place where you are staying
